Nearly 40,000 people covered “Rolling in the Deep,” 11,000 took on “Pumped Up Kicks,” 6,000 were inspired by “Somebody That I Used to Know.”

Until recently, all but a sliver were illegal, considered infringement under current copyright law. Nearly all were non-commercial, created out of love by fans of the source material, with no negative impact on the market value of the original.

This is creativity criminalized, quite possibly the most popular creative act that’s against the law.

Cover songs on YouTube don’t threaten artists, and may actually prevent new works by chilling talent that could go on to do great things.

I don’t think it’s an act of civil disobedience; nobody’s making a statement. Most people don’t know that cover songs need a synchronization license, and even if they did, trying to get one is a confusing and expensive proposition. Unlike the mechanical licenses used to release a cover song on an album, video sync licenses don’t have an affordable flat rate and require the publisher’s explicit permission.

Even as YouTube forges agreements with publishers to handle the synchronization rights for cover songs, it’s nearly impossible for musicians to tell whether their songs are covered or not.

This week, I set out to answer a seemingly simple question: when are YouTube cover songs legal, and how can we do this better?

Conflicting Information

Even trying to determine if a cover song is legal can be confusing for most musicians. There’s no shortage of answers online, but most of them are conflicting. Publishers, musicians, and publishers all give different answers, none of which are totally accurate. Even YouTube’s own FAQs are incomplete, made inaccurate by recent settlement agreements.

Like any area of copyright law, there’s no shortage of armchair lawyering on blogs and discussion forums about cover songs. A common myth is that cover songs fall under the “fair use” provisions of the Copyright Act, but that requires a transformative use. Despite this, over 60,000 cover songs on YouTube cite “fair use” in their title or description. (Whether uploaders actually believe that or are preemptively using it as a defense is anyone’s guess.)

While they happily encourage fans to upload covers, YouTube makes it clear that users must have the rights to all content they upload. “We tell users they must own the copyright or have the necessary rights for any content they upload,” said a YouTube representative. “It’s ultimately their responsibility to know whether they possess the rights for a particular piece of content.”

Their only specific guidance for cover songs is in their Copyright FAQ, which says, “Recording a cover version of your favorite song does not necessarily give you the right to upload that recording without permission from the owner of the underlying music.”

But this answer isn’t fully accurate. YouTube’s negotiated blanket synchronization licenses for its users from thousands of publishers, most notably the settlement with the National Music Publishers Association last August. This agreement allowed publishers to opt-in to a program that let them take a cut from a $ 4 million advance pool and up to 50 percent of the advertising revenue from any cover song they own the rights to.

Frustratingly, we have no idea which publishers have signed on. The NMPA doesn’t publish the list, making it impossible to figure out whether your song is covered by the agreement or not. (A spokesman for the NMPA was looking into the issue, but was unavailable at publication time. I’ll update if I hear back.)

Begging for Forgiveness

In reality, the only way to tell whether a song is legal is to risk breaking the law and losing your YouTube account — by uploading the video and waiting for copyright notices.

In the last few months, YouTube has quietly expanded Content ID beyond original recordings to detect cover versions and live performances using the underlying melodies. A YouTube representative confirmed with me, “Content ID’s technology allows us to identify works in an original sound recording, or in a cover version (by identifying the underlying melody of a song), using information provided to us by the publishers.”

YouTube hasn’t talked much about its melody matching technology, but it was in the news recently after a drunk Edmonton man belted “Bohemian Rhapsody” in the back of a police car. After the Content ID identified the song, EMI initially decided to take the video down, but soon changed its mind and authorized it with advertising.

YouTube’s Copyright Notices screen, with every disputed video. Credit: Adrian Holovaty

Everyblock founder Adrian Holovaty is well known on YouTube for his acoustic guitar covers, which have amassed millions of views. I asked him if Content ID identified the melodies in any of his videos. So far, seven of his videos were identified, with all but one rights holder choosing to leave the video online and collect the revenue. Only one video his cover of the Village People’s “YMCA,” was taken down by the songwriter, leaving Adrian with a “copyright strike” on his account. YouTube’s policy allows three strikes before the account is terminated and all videos removed.

The Flaws in the System

The system’s not perfect, though. Unscrupulous individuals are routinely using Content ID to claim content they don’t own to harvest ad dollars from unsuspecting users. For example, two of Adrian Holovaty’s disputed tracks are Django

Even trying to determine if a cover song is legal can be confusing for most musicians. There’s no shortage of answers online, but most of them are conflicting

Reinhardt songs from the 1930s, claimed by an obscure company named “Social Media Holdings.”

Other copyright claims may be accidental, as material they don’t actually own finds its way into the Content ID database, like this poor guy who’s received eight consecutive claims from companies claiming to own George Romero’s public domain Night of the Living Dead.

And Content ID isn’t immune to false positives, like the bird calls misidentified as music. Worse, for all these case, disputed Content ID claims bypass the DMCA process for counter-claims entirely, as I wrote about in February.

How can a musician decide what’s legitimate or worth fighting?

Still, YouTube’s Content ID is pushing publishers and rights holders into the modern age. It’s an ingenious approach for an otherwise dysfunctional copyright system that’s too hard for amateurs to navigate, making money for everyone involved while still allowing free creative expression.

The Need for Change

But there’s something strange about this begging-for-forgiveness approach to copyright. It’s like driving without traffic signs, only finding out you broke the law when you’re pulled over.

The real question: Why is it illegal in the first place?

Cover songs on YouTube are, almost universally, non-commercial in nature. They’re created by fans, mostly amateur musicians, with no negative impact on the market value of the original work. (If anything, it increases demand by acting as a free promotional vehicle for the track.)

The best solution is the hardest one: To reform copyright law to legalize the distribution of free, non-commercial cover songs.

Copyright law was intended to foster creativity by making it safe for creators to exclusively capitalize on their work for a limited period of time. Cover songs on YouTube don’t threaten that ability, and may actually prevent new works by chilling talent that could go on to do great things.

As we’ve seen with countless breakout artists from YouTube, budding musicians have built their careers from cover songs that evolved into original material. Karmin, Pomplamoose, Julia Nunes, Greyson Chance…. Even Justin Bieber started with covers of Chris Brown and Nee-Yo before getting discovered.

Now, the next generation of budding pop stars are covering Justin Bieber, with about 216,000 of them so far. It’s all part of the virtuous cycle of culture: We take from it, build on it, and then give back in return. The law should help that along, not hinder it.

Top image: With the help of YouTube’s Content ID, Sony monetizes a Paul McCartney cover. Users can indicate when they became an organ donor and publish that story for their friends to see. If users have not registered as an organ donor, they can click a link from that window and be taken to the Donate Life America page if they are in the U.S. or the NHS Organ Donation Campaign page if they are in the U.K. Donate Life California reported a 5,105 percent increase in online organ donor registrations a day after Facebook built in links for users to register and publicize their organ donor status on Timeline.

With the company’s mission being “to make the world more open and connected,” organizations with related goals should consider ways they might collaborate. World peace, voting, tolerance and environmental responsibility are some of the issues the social network has actively promoted in the past. Facebook seems to be most interested in the power of many lightweight interactions. Any initiative it gets involved with will likely be very simple and require little effort on the user’s behalf. Think a few clicks to make a statement or subtly alter someone’s behavior. The company is also likely to avoid any partnerships that would be too controversial. With more than 900 million users around the world, Facebook has to maintain its global appeal.

Take, for example, Facebook 2009 partnership with Stanford University’s Persuasive Technology Lab. As part of the lab’s Peace Dot project, the social network created a page to provide “metrics of peace,” including how many friend connections are being made between Israelis and Palestinians or how many people in Serbia believe world peace is possible. This shows how Facebook can present existing data in interesting ways to tell a story. The company is also able to poll its users, which could be useful for many non-profits.

More recently, Facebook has taken several actions to discourage bullying and promote child safety, including creating a safety advisory board with Common Sense Media, ConnectSafely, Childnet International, The Family Online Safety Institute and WiredSafety. The company also worked with the Child Exploitation and Online Protection Center in the U.K. to institute an opt-in “panic button” for users to report inappropriate behavior. These issues are are particularly important for Facebook to present itself as a safe place for children. There was also the January 2011 partnership with the Department of Justice to issue AMBER Alerts about missing children through Facebook pages, which showed how the site could be used to broadcast important messages. Organizations might want to consider other emergency notification or relief features that it could work with Facebook to develop.

The company has also been active in promoting participation in U.S. national elections since 2008. On election day, Facebook lets users search for their polling place and publish an “I voted” status. Again, this allowed users to take action and spread a message among their friends very easily. It offered a similar status-posting feature for users in Iran in 2009. These efforts were independent of any third-party organization, but Facebook has worked with news outlets for political polling and an ad agency to highlight the issues that matter to voters this year. The company would likely be interested to partner with a non-partisan organizations to find ways to increase awareness about political issues and encourage users to get involved in elections or local government, for example.

In addition to highlighting its own sustainable practices on its Green on Facebook page, the company created a social energy app in partnership with the National Resources Defense Council so users can compare their energy use to that of friends and other Americans. This is a good example of using data from a person’s friends and the wider Facebook community to help people understand an issue. Wallet and cash. Make sure you have enough cash to cover chips and drinks you might want to get during the game. You can never have enough nachos and hotdogs especially when you’re sitting at the stadium.

2. Your cell phone. Of course, no one leaves the house without having their cell phones, exactly why should you? And just in case you’ll want to catch that perfect moment on camera, cellular phones are great to have around as some arenas probably won’t let digital cameras.

3. Wet wipes. Of course, quite unorthodox as well as perhaps a bit to mommy to bring to basketball game, but count on me, you will thank yourself, or anyone else who’s spilled sticky cheese sauce around them after they jump because Detroit Red Wings score. Wet wipes will save your life and also the person’s next to you too.

4. Dry tissue, another thing you must not forget but often do. Tissue, like its wet counterpart is very important with spills and stains and for just wiping off anything that you might encounter.

5. A jacket. It could get very cold in the stadium while you’re waiting outside too, so bring a jacket to keep warm. It’s better to be warm and get to take the jacket off once you’re inside rather than staying cold and uncomfortable all throughout the game. You want to be comfy so you can enjoy the game at its best.

6. Glasses or contacts. Nothing’s worst than forgetting your glasses or contacts at a game, particularly when you’ve got seats that aren’t to ideal. Make sure you keep some extra ones within your bag too and a few contact lens solution merely to be safe and sound. You need to see and hear the game at its best, you don’t wish to be squinting and finding out who’s got the ball.

7. Your Detroit Red Wings jersey. What better way to show your loyalty and love to your favorite team by wearing their jersey to the game? Buy yours in advance and wear it when you get there, chances are, jerseys sold on game day cost way more than the usual and your size might not even be available. So get smart and buy ahead.

Posts Related to What Detroit Red Wings Tickets Buyers Should Bring To A Game

The Lowest Prices Around For Cowboys Tickets

If you are searching for low listed Dallas Cowboys tickets, then you've challenging in front of you. Thus, they are known as “psychoactive” substances. However, these chemical compounds aren’t for human consumption but they are thoroughly used for research as well as scientific research. The use of these research substances is to be completed according to certain guidelines that have been designed lawfully. This strategy has been taken because of the fact that a lot of folks have been utilizing the research chemicals as outlawed drugs.

The research chemicals are not regarded healthy for human consumption since these substances haven’t been tested or have not been subjected to tests inside the hospitals, therefore the basic safety of these drugs when consumed cannot be confirmed.

Legality of research chemicals in various nations

Mentioned below is a short review of the legal standing of research chemicals in different countries around the world. The validity is talked about in few of the nations.

What’s the situation in United states?

There is absolutely no legislation in the US that distinguishes research substances as planned. However, there are lots of research chemical compounds which are related to scheduled chemicals, both functionally and also structurally. Nonetheless, till date there has been no reports of prosecution associated to use of research chemicals, even though there have been cases, when suppliers have misled consumers of research chemical compounds with fake products.

Legitimacy of research chemicals Uk

Regulation regarding research chemicals UK is nicely created and evident. The guidelines related to research chemical compounds UK are as per Uk analogue law. The laws and regulations of Uk regulating using research chemicals is arranged and controlled. Regular adjustments do take place within the laws, thus they are powerful.

United Nation’s judgment

Presently, there is certainly no worldwide policy of United Nations connected to research substances. The legitimacy of research chemical compounds is unique from one particular country to yet another.

Authenticity to buy research chemicals

In case you are planning to buy research chemicals on the internet, every caution should be taken that they are genuine and the seller is delivering the correct product to you. Because there are many research chemicals that are identical in appearance, a lot of vendors pass it off as another chemical. Except if you’ve complete knowledge about these chemical compounds which are extensively used in research and scientific research, it’s really probable that you may be fooled.

Actually there have been incidents in the past where purchasers were fooled by vendors as they were supplied the wrong chemicals. In addition, in case you are not alert, your precious cash can get drained out.

A smart approach is when you buy research chemicals UK, constantly have a technical expert at your disposal who has enough knowledge in research chemical substances.

Previously there have been instances, when people who weren’t conscious of dealing with these research compounds fell ill right after using them in their labs. Whenever you are handling dangerous substances, utmost attention must be taken not just by you but also by the person who is providing information about these research compounds to his college students.

Posts Related to Research Chemicals And Their Usages In The Real World

Purple Bombs – A Brand New And Superb Add-on In Research Chemical Substances

The usage of research chemicals inside the Uk has received immense prominence over time. That only addresses lower-order risks.”

H5N1 engineering is conducted so that scientists can study what might happen in nature, giving them early warnings of what to expect in future pandemics. Virologists, epidemiologists and public health experts have argued for years over this strategy’s scientific value and potential risks, but those debates went largely unnoticed by the public.

That changed late in 2011 when two federally-funded research teams, one led by University of Wisconsin virologist Yoshihiro Kawaoka and the other by Dutch virologist Ron Fouchier, submitted scientific papers describing how they’d tweaked H5N1 into strains contagious enough to easily infect ferrets, a standard research model for human flu infection.

Until now, H5N1 has struggled to gain human traction, requiring close contact with infected animals or people, though it’s deadly when it happens: Mortality estimates range from 60 to 80 percent. That number may be inflated by unreported low-grade infections that aren’t fatal, but even lower estimates are plenty scary. The flu pandemic of 1918 had just a 2.5 percent mortality rate and killed 50 million people.

Vaccines and medicines are better now, but as demonstrated by the swine flu pandemic of 2009 and 2010, highly infectious influenza is extraordinarily difficult to control. With this in mind, a federal U.S. biosecurity watchdog in November flagged the Kawaoka and Fouchier studies for further precautionary review. After a storm of public outrage and scientific misgivings, the researchers announced a 60-day pause on their research, with formal publication delayed until the flu community agreed it was safe.

‘We are creating a risk that is much greater than that posed by nature.’

During this time, researchers who supported Kawaoka and Fouchier, and even some of their critics, framed objections in terms of bioterror and whether the findings’ details should be published. They worried that rogue researchers might use them to design weaponized influenza strains.

The May 2 publication of Kawaoka’s study in Nature, and the Dutch government’s green-light of Fouchier’s paper, signal that bioterror fears have been allayed. According to the prevailing view, potential benefits outweigh the risks. The conclusion is that for bioterrorists to use the findings would be very hard, while scientists can learn from them immediately.

But many epidemiologists and public health experts say poor handling inside laboratories, rather than bioterror, is the real threat. More than 100 accidents in high-security labs took place between 2003 and 2009, involving everything from flu-infected ferret bites to dropped vials of encephalitis, slips with Ebola needles and lost shipments of bubonic plague. The 1977 “Russian flu” epidemic may have involved a lab escape. Less accidentally, anthrax used in the 2001 attacks almost certainly originated in U.S. military laboratories.

Such events have been downplayed during the current the engineered-flu controversy. Nature‘s “independent review” of risks associated with publishing Kawaoka’s research doesn’t even mention accidental release, and supporters of the controversial experiments say the researchers are careful. But dozens of labs and hundreds if not thousands of researchers may eventually handle the new flu strains and others like them.

“There’s too high a probability of escape if there are 40 or 50 labs working on something,” said Lynn Klotz, a senior science fellow at the Center for Arms Control and Non-Proliferation. In a commentary published in January in Nature, Klotz estimated a 1 percent chance of accidental release per year at each lab working on SARS, the 1918 influenza or the new H5N1 strains. “We are creating a risk that is much greater than that posed by nature. Laboratories need stronger precautions,” wrote Klotz.

Research on H5N1 and the new strains was conducted at what’s known as Biosafety Level 3, or one step down from the moon-suited, multiple-air locked, ultra-high-security of Biosafety Level 4, which is typically reserved for highly-lethal pathogens for which there’s no known cure. That’s precisely what engineered H5N1 strains might turn out to be: While Kawaoka’s strains proved non-lethal to ferrets, there was no way to know that before the experiments began.

Of the pathogens currently handled at BSL-4, including hemorrhagic fevers, ebola, tick-borne encephalitis and hantavirus, few are contagious. They primarily threaten people who work directly with them. “If they get out into the environment, most of them are fortunately not very transmissible,” said disease epidemiologist Stephen Morse of Columbia University. With more-contagious pathogens, “you’d want to be very concerned about lab accidents and how they’re being handled in the laboratory.”

“They should use Biosafety Level 4. It’s what BSL-4 was developed for,” said geneticist Steven Salzberg of Johns Hopkins University. “The avian flu people have been saying this disease is incredibly dangerous, kills about 60 percent of the people it infects, and could infect hundreds of millions of people if it goes pandemic — but they don’t say it needs BSL-4? How could they say those two things?”

Doctors test incoming passengers for swine flu at Shanghai's Pudong airport in 2009. Photo: Kyle Simourd/Flickr

According to Ian Lipkin, a virus surveillance expert and director of Columbia University’s Center for Infection and Immunity, handling procedures are balanced against the obstacles they raise against conducting research in the first place.

“Some people are concerned. They may push to have this work done at higher levels of containment and restrict the investigation to a few key laboratories. That’s not been decided yet. But the push back, which has happened in the past with SARS, is that doing so would slow down the pace at which research can be pursued,” Lipkin said.

Biosafety recommendations are set by the federal Centers for Disease Control, National Institutes of Health and Department of Agriculture, and formalized in a document known as Biosafety in Microbiological and Biomedical Laboratories, or BMBL. According to the NIH and CDC, there are no plans to change the recommendations for how engineered H5N1 should be handled.

Deborah Wilson, director of the NIH’s Division of Occupational Health and Safety, said “this virus is safely worked with under enhanced BSL-3 conditions.” And Amy Patterson, director of the NIH’s Office of Science Policy, said both Kawaoka and Fouchier’s labs were inspected in 2011 and found to be secure.

A policy that may be changing, however, is the classification of H5N1 under the Select Agent Program, a system established after 9/11 to limit access to especially dangerous pathogens. Researchers who work with select agents must register their projects, and receive background checks and extra federal oversight. It’s a cumbersome process, and researchers have asked that less-dangerous pathogens be moved into a second, less-restrictive category, with only “tier 1″ pathogens receiving continued close monitoring.

According to Ebright and others, engineered H5N1 will not be tier 1, vastly increasing the number of people allowed to work with it and reducing oversight upon those people. “There are over 400 institutions and 15,000 people with access to select agents,” said Ebright. “After the stratification goes into effect, the non-tier 1 number would grow larger. How much larger? That’s driven entirely by funding.”

Ebright emphasized that, while Kawaoka and Fouchier’s manipulations of H5N1 are high-profile, they represent a multi-laboratory, long-term research effort coordinated by the NIH and CDC to engineer more virulent strains of H5N1, the 1918 flu and SARS. Concerns about the new flu strains should be multiplied across these programs.

“If it hadn’t been generated in these labs, it would have been done in a half-dozen other labs that received funding for this project,” Ebright said. “This research was funded to increase national security, but by its very nature, it creates risks to U.S. health, agriculture, economic security and national security. The social network’s mobile platform also helps web apps like the Washington Post Social Reader, Flixter and BranchOut.

Visitors from Facebook accounted for 1.1 billion visits to iOS and HTML5 apps, meaning an average of more than 6 visits per user. These numbers are up from February when Facebook said it drove 60 million users to mobile apps an average of about five times per month. Next month is likely to be much higher since the social network began supporting mobile discovery for native Android apps last week.

Facebook says iOS video sharing app Viddy now has more than 16 million registered users, in part because of Open Graph integration that shares user activity between the mobile and desktop versions. Because of similar functionality, networking web app BranchOut has seen more than 18 million people come in from the social network in the past 28 days. Facebook also highlighted movie review and info mobile web app, Flixster, which has seen a tenfold increase in the number of visitors from Facebook in the past four weeks. These visitors generated a total of 15 million visits in the same period.

Facebook also made a point in its blog post that seven of the top 10 grossing iOS apps and six of the top 10 grossing Android apps integrate with Facebook through single sign-on or Open Graph.

Facebook’s mobile platform allows HTML5 and native iOS and Android apps to get distribution through News Feed, bookmarks and requests. When users navigate to mobile app links from Facebook, the appropriate native app will open on a user’s device or lead to a download page if the user doesn’t have it yet. Developers also have the option to integrate Facebook Open Graph, which lets games automatically publish stories about user activity, including reaching a new high score, leveling up, earning an achievement or surpassing another friend playing the game. These stories are distributed through mobile Timeline and News Feed and can drive traffic back to a mobile game.

Posts Related to Facebook platform sent 160M users to mobile apps in April

Native Android apps can now get distribution through Facebook discovery channels

Facebook today announced that native Android apps will now be able to benefit from the same social discovery channels as web apps and native iOS ...

Facebook highlights ability to drive traffic to third-party mobile apps

Facebook shared some new statistics today about the growth some mobile apps have seen since integrating with the social network’s platform. But a new study finds that the process that drives evolution was still shaping us as recently as the 19th century.

The finding comes from an analysis of the birth, death, and marital records of 5,923 people born between 1760 and 1849 in four farming or fishing villages in Finland. Researchers led by evolutionary biologist Alexandre Courtiol of the Institute for Advanced Study Berlin picked this time period because agriculture was well established by then and there were strict rules against divorce and extramarital affairs. The team looked at four aspects of life that affect survival and reproduction, key signposts of natural selection: Who lived beyond age 15, who got married and who didn’t, how many marriages each person had (second marriages were possible only if a spouse died), and how many children were born in each marriage. “All these steps can influence the number of offspring you have,” says Courtiol.

Natural selection was alive and well in all of the villages the researchers surveyed. Almost half of the people died before age 15, for example, suggesting that they had traits disfavored by natural selection, such as susceptibility to disease. As a result, they contributed none of their genes to the next generation. Of those that made it through childhood, 20 percent did not get married and had no children, again suggesting that some traits prevented individuals from obtaining mates and passing on their genes to the next generation.

The numbers were about the same for landed and landless individuals, indicating that wealth did not buffer the environment enough to prevent natural selection from culling or favoring individuals. “Although there is agriculture and transmission of wealth, there is still as much room for evolution to proceed as in other animals,” says Courtiol, whose team reports its findings online today in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.

The Finns were also subject to sexual selection, in that men who were able to attract new mates had more offspring. With one partner, the average was about five children; with four partners, that jumped to 7.5, Courtiol notes. Men benefited more than women in terms of begetting more children, most likely because they tended to remarry young women with good child-bearing potential. Thus sexual selection was more important in men than in women.

From the records they had, the researchers could not tell which traits were being selected for, but the variation in the number of offspring—from zero to 17—indicates there was a large opportunity for selection to occur. That variation is the grist for evolution.

The importance of sexual selection is well accepted in birds and fish, “but this is the first time that sexual selection has been so well documented in humans,” says Stephen Stearns, an evolutionary biologist at Yale University. As for showing natural selection, “they are providing additional, confirmational evidence.”

“Without a doubt, natural selection occurs in modern humans,” agrees Jacob Moorad, an evolutionary biologist at Duke University in Durham, North Carolina, who was not involved in the study. He thinks this work will inspire other researchers with large databases of data on humans to look at how selection operates in populations.

Courtiol is not certain how strong natural selection is today, particularly in the developed world. But he says that at the very least, the data show that even as recently as 200 years ago, it still played a role in shaping humans as a species. As such, he notes, biological and cultural processes should both be considered in understanding how humans are changing through time.

This story provided by ScienceNOW, the daily online news service of the journal Science.

Image: Church documents chronicled the life of 19th century Finnish families, providing data for analyzing the potential for evolution in people. As a result of the bug, users will not be able to see any of their events from the drop-down menu within the tool. There are a few workarounds for users who want to get the word out about an event, but these ads are not as effective as traditional Facebook event ads because they do not always include a button to RSVP.

One option for users affected by the bug is to create an event through a Facebook page rather than a personal account. Then users can indicate that they want to promote a specific post from that page. The event should appear from a drop-down menu. The resulting ad has more words and a smaller photo than traditional event ads, which is likely to make it less effective. Also, users who are not fans of the page will see a “Like this page” call to action rather than “Join,” which Facebook uses in event ads to let users RSVP with one click. (Note that our sample screenshots include the “Invite Friends” call to action because the user already Likes the page and has joined the event.)

Another option is for users to create an ad, either from their page or personal account, and promote it as an external URL, rather than a native Facebook event. This gives event organizers full control over the headline, body copy and image for the ad, but does not include a “Join” or Like button. The benefit here is that the image will be the same size as it would be for traditional event ads. However, users might be less likely to click the ad if it appears as though it is leading them off-Facebook. It will also be harder to track how many users RSVP as a result of the ad versus other means.

Facebook did not offer timing on when the issue with event ads will be resolved.

Posts Related to Facebook bug prevents some users from creating event ads

Facebook to bring back option to invite all group members to events

Users will once again be able to send event invites to all members of a group, a Facebook spokesperson tells us.
